I know you've been exposed to High School Musical at some point. *eyes flist assessingly* Maybe you watched it on your own, maybe you were forced into it by some young family member. Maybe you were just too lazy to change the channel when it popped up on the Disney Channel. The point is, you know that it's fun and full of plot holes, and you probably remember Ryan, the hat-wearing thespian, and Chad, the curly haired basketball player. And if you've seen High School Musical 2, you probably remember the two of them playing the slashiest game of baseball EVAR.

ETA: If you aren't familiar with these movies and characters, you can read the highly entertaining ship manifesto for Chad and Ryan here.

Whether you liked the movies or not, you need to go read Rehearsals by [livejournal.com profile] fools_game right now. It is not only one of the best HSM fics I've read, it's also done a brilliant job of getting inside the head (and body) of a teenage boy discovering his sexuality and falling in love for the first time. It's honest and fun and full of the confusion, joy, and angst that high school romances can offer. Really delightful. Go read now!

I have only ever heard the name "High School Musical" and didn't even know if it was a show or a movie or what. Based on your "curly haired basketball player" description, I *think* I've seen a macro from it. And yet, I have happily followed your link because you make wonderful recommendations, and I have no regrets. I love the adorable way the world is just the two of them, and everyone else around them understands and sees what's going on between them.

Well, clearly my perceptopns of what you have and haven't been exposed to have been highly colored by my own experience, in which my son (then 8) and my sister-in-law (then 18) both flipped out over High School Musical when it premiered. And the kids I used to sub for in Florida sang the songs constantly.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the story, even without the context. There's a ship manifesto here (http://community.livejournal.com/ship_manifesto/192192.html?view=5043904), if you're at all interested in what these guys look like and where they come from.

See, I spent ages not reading HSM, because I was worried it would all be juvenile angst and OOC schmoop. Then I stumbled on [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch's The Other Side of You while reading her Torchwood stories, and all of a sudden I realized there were good authors writing HSM. So you see, when I find a really wonderful Chad/Ryan story, I'm still a little surprised and incredibly delighted. Yours is lovely and deserves to be pimped all over the place.
